How to create a fillable PDF form

Turn a static PDF into a form people can fill in

A form exported from Word or scanned from paper is just a picture of a form: recipients have to print it or draw text boxes over it. Adding real form fields makes it fillable in any standard PDF reader, so people can type their answers, save the file, and send it back.

Fields you can add

Your PDF opens in the editor with the Form tab selected. Pick a field type, draw it on the page where the answer should go, and adjust its position and size. The fields are saved as standard PDF form fields.

  • Text fields for names, dates, addresses, and free-form answers.
  • Checkboxes for yes/no questions and consent boxes, and radio buttons where only one answer may be picked.
  • Dropdowns and list boxes with your own list of choices.

Tips for placing fields

Draw each field just above its printed line or inside its printed box, and zoom in to line it up precisely. Keep fields a little taller than the text they will hold so answers are not cut off, and place radio buttons for one question next to each other.

Works in the readers people already use

Because the fields are standard AcroForm fields, the form can be filled in Adobe Reader, in browsers, and in most PDF apps, and the completed copy can be saved or printed. The form is built in your browser, and the result has no watermark.

After creating the form

Switch the Form tab to fill mode and test the form yourself before sending it. If the form must not be altered, protect it with a password, and if you need signatures, recipients can add them with Sign PDF.
